The answer is “yes” and “no”.
Many essential oils were historically used to enhance sensual experience. But not all of them have actual biological aphrodisiac effect.
The following essential oils were historically used as aphrodisiacs. Most of the “erotic” effect comes from calming properties of these essential oils:
- Cardamom (Ellettaria cardamomum) – has an exotic smell that soothes worries. It increases confidence, lifts apathy and addresses the mood swings.
- Sandalwood (Santalum paniculatum)– increases self-image and self-esteem, heals emotional breakdowns, alleviates depression and fear of failing. There is some anecdotal evidence that in some men it acts like natural Viagra.
- Jasmine (Jasminum grandiflorum)– increases confidence and happiness, lifts depression and misery, releases guilt and stress.
- Ylang-Ylang (Cananga odorata) – reduces stress and depression, eases the fear of love and rejection, boosts feelings of euphoria, supports pleasure and joy, stimulates sensual awakening.
- Patchouli (Pogostemom cablin) – relieves anxiety and grief, helps to connect with one’s sensual nature, reduces the fear of sexuality.
- Neroli (Citrus aurantium var. amara) – reduces the fear of love and feelings, increases the sense of joy, decreases stress and grief.
- Rose Absolute (Rose damascena) – increases the feeling of happiness and joy, brings the sense of peace, and decreases the fear of sexuality and the fear of love.
Here are some blends to diffuse in the room for your Valentine evening.

- Add 5 drops from your stock bottle to 1 oz bottle of jojoba oil.
Safety:
- Do not use any of the essential oils internally
- Do not put any essential oil on the skin undiluted
- Do not put essential oils in or around the eyes or near other orifices
- Do not use the above blends on the skin before UV exposure
- Keep all essential oils out of the reach of children; they can be poisonous if swallowed
